Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth?
If your gums bleed on a regular basis, it may be an indication that you are developing a more complex oral health concern. Bleeding gums are not normal, and if persistent, should be examined by Emerald Isle Smiles dentist Dr. Aubrey Myers as soon as possible.
Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums are often indicators of an oral bacterial infection known as gum disease or periodontal disease. Gum disease is a progressive condition that left untreated can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, bone deterioration, and even systemic health concerns.
Gum Disease
Gum disease has three stages of progression. Early diagnosis can prevent damage to your teeth and gums, allowing for conservative and efficient treatment with out the need for gum surgery.
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. During this phase, Dr. Myers can treat gingivitis with thorough professional teeth cleaning. Our dental care team may also recommend more efficient at home oral hygiene practices such as anti-bacterial rinses and flossing techniques.
As the bacteria spread and begin to form pockets in the gum line, gingivitis becomes gum disease. At this stage gums become inflamed are prone to bleeding and can be tender to the touch. Scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning technique can be used to eradicate bacteria growing in the gums.
Advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis, can cause more complex dental concerns and may begin to increase a patient’s likelihood of developing a systemic or cardiovascular related illness. Compromised gum tissue can allow harmful oral bacteria to spread to the blood stream, increasing the risk of heart attacks, inflammation, strokes, and systemic or cardiovascular disease.
Treatment for Bleeding Gums
Dr. Myers offers a range of treatment options for gum disease. She will thoroughly evaluate your oral health to determine the stage of gum disease and offer a personalized treatment plan to both restore and maintain healthy gums. Treatment options can include:
- Antibacterial rinses: for early stage gum disease or patients with chronic gum health concerns, the at home use of an antibacterial rinse may be recommended to reduce the presence of harmful bacteria on tooth and gum surfaces.
- Scaling and root planing: if plaque and tartar are built up along the gum line and tooth roots, an intense cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing can be used to remove it and allow the gums to heal.
- Oral surgery: for advanced periodontitis or when extensive damage has occurred to the gums, Dr. Myers may coordinate your care with a local specialist.
