Fighting Gum Disease with Arestin
What Is Arestin?
Arestin is a topical antibiotic that fights the bacteria that cause gum disease. It is a powder made up of thousands of microspheres. These are tiny, bead-like particles smaller than grains of sand and not visible to the naked eye. They release antibiotics over long periods of time into the pockets where bacteria breed, helping your gums heal.
Why Would Dr. Myers Use Arestin In Your Treatment?
If you’ve been diagnosed with periodontitis (advanced gum disease), Dr. Myers may recommend Arestin in your treatment. Gum disease is caused by microbial plaque that colonize on the your tooth’s surface and below the gumline. This bacteria breaks down the tissue and the bone supporting your teeth. If left untreated, your gums can become enflamed and the tissues and bone that hold your teeth up can begin to deteriorate. Infected gums can pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that become a breeding ground for more bacteria. Dr. Myers would use Arestin to help fight gum disease after a periodontal procedure called scaling and root planing.
What Is Scaling And Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure where Dr. Myers deep cleans above and below the gum line, removing the plaque and tartar that has built up on the teeth.
